Openly LGBTI candidates in Peru have successfully run for office, and currently there are openly LGBTI elected officials from the local level all the way up to Congress. Moving forward, Victory Institute and PROMSEX will be conducting research on the impact of work on political participation of the LGBTI population, and will explore avenues for deepening participation within political parties and state institutions.
Peru is a beautiful country with a rich history and a friendly population, so any traveler will enjoy immersing themselves in the culture here. There are so many things that draw tourists of all kinds in, from the Andes mountain range to Machu Picchu, to the Amazon Jungle trips. But the true beauty of the country comes from its people, who are, on the whole, welcoming and accepting. There have also been considerable political challenges to the anti-discrimination law, but the current president has vetoed any attempt to weaken or remove the law so far.

While many were able to flee the scene before violence occurred, eight patrons were taken out of the club, brought out to the street and killed. Photographers Andrew Mroczek and Juan Jose Barboza-Gubo are the Edge of Humanity Magazine contributors of this documentary photography. Although no assailant is shown, the series underscores the dangerous effects of patriarchy and intolerance, and examines how these constructs create the toxic environments that lend little worth to LGBTQ lives.
Gay Peru is very much an underground scene, as the country still discriminates against same sex couples. Lima has a small gay scene, smaller than you would expect for a capital city, but which does offer lesbians and gays the opportunity to mix with others. The gay Peru community is focussed around the Miraflores area of Lima, where hotels, saunas, restaurants and a dozen or so bars and discos for gays and lesbians can be found. The first Peru Gay Pride march took place in and in both Cusco and Arequipa, small gay communities have been emerging.
