Intro: Probably the most immediate and visual source of knowledge about the LGBT life in Haiti is the film 'Of Men and Gods' which documents the discreet world of gays and transvestites in this country where homosexuality is legal but not tolerated by the mostly Christian culture. Eighty percent of the country is Catholic and another fifteen percent are Protestant; needless to say, the Biblical curse is heavily upon gays here. Yet more than half the population also indulge in voodoo beliefs and rituals where it's the spirit that matters, not the gender or orientation.
Jean-Francois Gay is an artist, musician, and actor from the favela of Tibwa in the Martissant neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. After seeing his older brother playing the guitar, Jean-Francois decided to learn himself. His father promised to buy him his own guitar but passed away in before being able to offer him that gift. Instead, Jean-Francois started playing by borrowing guitars from others around him.
The situation in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is worsening by the hour, a crisis that has been met with a staggering indifference on the part of many nations. Faced with this unbearable situation, organisations in Guadeloupe, Martinique, the United States and mainland France have issued a press release calling on the authorities in their respective countries to enable the dispatch of a military force to protect the people of Haiti from those who threaten to turn the nation into a mass grave.
